Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston noting that Misses Henrietta, Jane, and Lois arrived Friday and with Miss Jessie “constitute a lively & agreeable party”; reporting that Laura and Clemmie have left; Mr. and Mrs. Brinton, along with Miss Patty Nevin, dined at Wheatland before leaving for Europe; lamenting the death of his dog, Leo; explaining a financial matter; citing her local tax obligation; commenting favorably on the Nevins, and relating that George W. Franklin left his law practice to enter into the hardware business with his father-in-law. Envelope annotation: “May 28/66 Explaining bond.” Wheatland.

Custodial History: The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
