Summary: "A relationship between [Thaddeus] Stevens and...[Robert Boston] is an important counter narrative. Most traditional accounts of the local Underground Railroad activity emphasize the actions of white stationmasters such as William Wright in Columbia or Daniel Gibbons in Bird-in-Hand. African-American involvement while not ignored is generally presented as being of secondary importance. Each demonstrable piece of evidence of Black involvement in effort to combat slavery strengthens arguments for a tradition of Black agency and necessitates a reassessment of the lives and experiences of African Americans in the Antebellum Era."

Description: Anonymous, six-page typewritten manuscript with narratives about James Gibbons, Daniel Gibbons, and Dr. Joseph and Phebe Gibbons. Some of this material appears in Marianna Gibbons Brubaker's 1911 paper on the Underground Railroad and the Gibbons family, but comments near the end of the piece indicate that she did not write this. Marianna Brubaker, in her typewritten "Beechdale, the home of the Gibbons family... and some of the people connected with it'' collection of family information (the historical society has a copy), suggested that it was written by "a friend who lived in Bird-in-Hand and was of the generation of Joseph's children".; 1. "James Gibbons Sr. and the Division of his Real Estate.''; 2. "Daniel Gibbons and Constable Hughes.''; 3. "Daniel Gibbons and Rebecca Evans.''; 4. "Bird-in-Hand Lyceum.''
