Two handwritten valentines with raised decorative border. First is 1 stanza, 4 lines and signed "Valentine." Verse is similar to that attributed to Dr. Hawkesworth in The New Foundling Hospital for Wit, 1784. Second is 1 stanza, 4 lines and signed "[Peabel]". Since the valentines are in different hands it is probable that they were exchanged between Thomas Welsh and Annie Young. It is unclear how the second one is signed, but perhaps it is a pet name that Thomas had for Annie. Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. A lace-bordered valentine consisting of one stanza, ten lines. The opening lines of the valentine seem to be taken from a valentine poem written by T. Tessier and included in "The Bower of Love or the Compleat Valentine Writer," 1830. Titled, "To Miss Annie Young Feby 14th, 1848." Signed "Columbia, Valentine." Note: Thomas Welsh and Annie Young were married on October 24, 1850.

Some small parts of the edge lace are missing, and the lace has largely separated from the backing sheet (along the fold line). Backing sheet is slightly torn along one fold.
