Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston hoping she is having as much fun in Havana “as a good Episcopalian should”; noting that Kitty and Ellen are sick; stating that Annie and Harriet have left on “good footing”; having not seen any of the Nevins except Wilberforce; stating that the only daughter of Ohio Senator Allen dropped by with her husband, Dr. Scott; noting that good servants are hard to find and keep, but he likes Lizzie and hopes she will stay; commenting that Mrs. Norris could find no house in Lancaster she liked and has returned to Philadelphia (though he could have sold her the Lane house for $15,000 or $16,000); having called on Mrs. Jenkins where he met the President of the Patriot Daughters, adding that Mrs. Jenkins was sorry not to have attended Harriet’s wedding, but said little about Mrs. Lane, but that Mrs. Jenkins might have come if she had known that Harriet [Old] and Jane Slaymaker were there; enclosing a note (which came to him open) from Mrs. E. F. Etter, “who is a lady known to Miss Ann W. Stephens” and that at present he is “sequestered” with her. Embossed envelope addressed to Miss Harriet Lane. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane returning Lily’s letter and detailing Dr. Blake’s noting that Mrs. Berghmans expected Harriet to visit, the wedding of Harriet’s Cousin Weaver including the bridesmaid Miss Sallie Contee, grand-daughter of “my old & valued Governor Kant of Maryland,” and reporting that the Daily Globe had published Dr. Blake’s letter denying “the appropriations for furniture.” With envelope addressed in care of Frederick Brown, Esquire, Philadelphia.
