Contains 197 paginated pages with vertical column lines, plus a 22 page front index and a 22 page up-side-down back index (blank), the tabs of both indexes were cut from the book pages. Also, 3 unpaginated leaves in front of the back index have account information from 1818, 1819 and 1821, plus 9 blank unpaginated in front of the back index.
Front Cover - Inside: "EARLY 19TH CENTURY; GRIST MILL LEDGER OF; SLAYTER BROWN, SON OF;THE QUAKER LEADER; JEREMIAH BROWN OF; PEACH BOTTOM" is written on bottom half.
Front Leaves: Are a 21 tabbed page index. The back sides of each tab are blank.
End Leaves: Are a 20 page tabbed index, The tabs are upside down and the pages are blank.
Back Cover - "Ledger A" is written on the outside of the back cover, back contains an index of clients and what pages they appear on.
Book references an itemized list of client profits and expenses, and the employees of the mill and what they were being compensated for. The profits list ranges from selling and grinding corn, wheat, clover seed, and rye as well as sawing boards. The recorded expenses for the mill include employee wages, transportation costs, and rent. The last page of the account book lists the work done at the schoolhouse in 1818 by helpers Peter and James. Three pressed ferns were also found within the account book (Pages. 1, 19, & 130).

Son of Jeremiah Brown and brother of Judge Jeremiah Brown, Slater Brown was born in 1787 and inherited his father's mill in 1820. After continuing to grow the family mill and business, Slater died in 1855, leaving the mill to his son, Jeremiah Brown Jr.
Binding is damaged, top of back cover is not attached and top of spine has worn to the pages, cover has red rot; the last 33 pages are not attached at the top half of the pages.
Page in front of the back index is missing the bottom ~1".

Account Book of Slater Brown’s gristmill book D, from Little Britain Township and Fulton Township.
Book references an itemized list of customers profits and expenses, and the employees of the mill and what they were being compensated for. Son of Jeremiah Brown and brother of Judge Jeremiah Brown, Slater Brown was born in 1787 and inherited his father's mill in 1820. After continuing to grow the family mill and business, Slater died in 1855, leaving the mill to his son, Jeremiah Brown Jr.
Book cover is damaged but intact. Red rot of cover and spine is present and the leather has worn to the base at places on the edges. Spine has separated at the top rear seam. Spine had "LEDGER" printed on it and what appears to be a vertical 1/2" burn mark at the top.

NOTE: This is a combination Account and Day Book. The first part is an account book and the back part is a day book.
Contains 249 leaves plus an 22 page index. Covers are marbleized inside. The 1st leaf has accounting information written on it and the second leaf is blank. There are 2 separate paginations: The front pagination (pp. 1-390) is a listing of accounts of various customers. The back pagination (pp. 1-112 + 3 additional leaves and the first 2 leaves are p. 1) is a day book of daily transactions.
Three newspaper articles are glued to front leaves 2 and 3: Recipes for Raspberry Syrup, Blackberry Syrup, Current wine, White Wine, Elder Wine, Black Current Wine and Current Jelly; Acceptance letters of July 1850 Whig Candidates from Bucks County, and Selins Grove (sic), and Washington, Pa.

Robert Baldwin (1805-1888)
1827 - Robert Baldwin, school teacher came to Cains to reside at The Bull's Head.
1830 - Robert Baldwin and John Cains opened a store in Cains.
1843 - Robert Baldwin built his store and home on the corner of Cains Road and the Old Philadelphia Pike.
1849 - Robert Baldwin was elected to the State Legislature.
Book covers are worn, have red rot but are intact; two index tabs P-Q and R-S are missing. Pages have foxing. 15 leaves have been cut out or torn out: (pp. 4-5), (pp.18-27) and (pp.84-105).
The front third leaf is unattached.

Series 1 contains invoices, arrest warrants, and tax collector books for the city of Lancaster. Invoices that were approved by the city council in 1878, 1883 and 1884 for payroll and supplies include road and bridge maintenance, water works, fire departments, clerk and inspection work, and costs incurred by the city during an outbreak of small pox. Arrest warrants for 1918-1919 show names of defendant(s) and police officer, the charge, date and case number. There are also tax collector records for 1860-1889, incomplete.
Series 2 contains documents regarding the market houses, waterworks, lamps, roads, railroad and city ordinances. Petitions support a candidate for night watchman, seek to repeal an ordinance for hanging signs and regulations for public scales, and request a reward for the apprehension of a murderer. There is an 1815 naturalization certificate for James Williams and a resolution regarding a visit of Gen. Andrew Jackson.
Series 3 contains miscellaneous items related to the Borough of Lancaster (1742 to 1818) found in the Document Collection. Items include an act regulating the buildings and keeping in repair the streets, lanes, and alley of Lancaster, passed 14 January 1774; oaths of office sworn by various men from 1764 to 1769; and an extract of Lancaster Borough laws enacted 22 January 1774 reporting the regulations and fines of this borough.

Description
The documents in MG0545 Series 5 pertain to providing street lighting around Lancaster City. Series begins in 1834 with the City Council receiving bids for oil to burn in street lamps and concludes in 1895 with an invoice from the Citizens' Electric, Heat and Power Co. This series also includes invoices for parts, payment receipts for various labors connected to the city power system, petitions to have lamps installed or removed, and bids from companies to receive the city contract to provide citizens of Lancaster with light.
