Johnston explaining that the weight of James Buchanan’s tomb will be carried by an interior brick arch; asserting that the plan differs only slightly from the wishes of Mr. Buchanan, unlike the draft which he received from Mr. Johnston which is very pretty; and that H. B. Swarr and E. Y. Buchanan have approved the plan. Lancaster.

Swarr mentioning Mrs. Johnston’s severe illness; hoping that the servants Francis and Thomas will receive equal shares of the estate; noting that Mrs. Johnston believed that important private letters of her uncle were displaced or removed from Wheatland last summer by Rev. Edward Young Buchanan during her short absence; asking if Mr. Buchanan and Mr. Henry have agreed to pay Mr. Reed the additional $5000; noting that the rise or fall of stocks after division should have no effect on their distribution; criticizing the broker handling the sale of securities; and urging the prompt closing of the estate. Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.
