Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane advising her to ask Mrs. Kennedy to appoint H. B. Swarr her attorney to draw up estate papers; admitting that he opened the enclosed letter from Mr. Florey in which he wants to close a loan to her but with conditions; thinking that the influence of Parson Rosenmiller on Dr. Lane would affect adversely the estates of the family; asking that she find out from James Henry whether New York paid interest in gold or “depreciated paper”; finding pleasure in visiting his Chester County farm; and rejoicing at Mrs. Henry’s recovery. advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing his pleasure that she is leaving Washington soon for Baltimore to meet Mr. Johnston’s family, regretting she has not seen Maria Weaver, relating that Miss Hetty is well again but getting old, Thomas is staying at the insistence of Father Keenan, Miss Annie is most agreeable, asking her opinion of Mr. Phillips, and praising Lily and Mr. Berghmans while complaining of indigestion.
