Description
Typed transcription of a poem written by Lieutenant Thomas Welsh on the eve of his departure for the Mexican War. Poem consists of 4 stanzas, 4 lines each. At the bottom of the page is the announcement of the death of Gen. Welsh and the seven lines that Annie Welsh added sometime after the poem first appeared in Harper's Weekly, 2 January 1892. Digitization of the James Buchanan Collection was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Autobiography of Thomas Welsh that was probably written in his late teens. This history details Thomas Welsh's work and schooling from age 8 through about age 16. Several people are mentioned, including an unnamed uncle. It appears to be the start of a longer document, except that the back of the page is an unrelated document. This is the first page of a 24 page package, apparently written variously in his late teens/early twenties, and subsequently bound together, probably by Thomas Welsh himself.

Reasonably good condition, with slight discoloration and some edge deterioration. Judging by the binding, this is page 4 of the packet. The first 2 pages are missing, and p. 3 is TW-A-XX-01(a), on the backside of this. The rest of the pages are bound upside down (relative to the first 4 pages), including TW-A-XX-01(d) and TW-A-XX-01(e), which are part of the same folio sheet as TW-A-XX-01(a) and TW-A-XX-01.

Miscellaneous notes and sketches written by Thomas Welsh, including: 1) A sketch about the amount of money the public had to pay for Queen Victoria's wedding, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger. 2) A notice of the death of General Thomas Sumpter [Sumter] of South Carolina, evidently copied from the Philadelphia Ledger, June 23, 1840. 3) A note about the population of Lowell, Mass. being top heavy in favor of females, evidently from the Times, Philadelphia. 4) A note about the suicide death (by starvation) of John Jordan, from the Columbia Spy. 5) A mock newspaper article about Thomas Welsh leaving Columbia August 29, 1843 for Baltimore and Washington.

Poems and notes by Thomas Welsh. This page consists of 1) Two stanzas from the anonymous short poem “Music” included at the beginning of the document use the metaphor of music to describe the grandeur of sounds found throughout nature (waterfalls, wind, rain, streams, etc.). The 2 additional lines suggest that Welsh may have been trying to add to the poem. 2) 9 lines of bold script identifying Thomas Welsh at Mrs. Philips Missouri Hotel in Little Rock, July 30, 1845; and also referencing Captain Alexander at Fort Smith; Daniel Boone Logan, son of Col. Logan, Creole Agent; Charles Adamson of Little Rock; Mr. Hicks printer; the Steamboat Frankland with Kendall as Master, Wade as Clerk, and Dallow as Bar Keeper. These appear to be notes made by Welsh to remember names and details.

This three-stanza poem, "There is a Home," evidently written by Thomas Welsh, seems to be a lament about his apparent exile from Columbia for some unidentified misdeed.
