Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson detailing his travels from Philadelphia, to Harrisburg, and then to Lancaster and possibly New York unless detained by orders of the President; feels closer to her since he knows that the waters of the Susquehanna flowing by him now will soon enter the Chesapeake Bay and then flow by her in Annapolis; jokes about writing long letters; found her mother in good spirits after seeing her in Philadelphia; is writing from the home of James B. Lane (Harriet Lane’s brother) in Lancaster where all are kind, but he doesn’t like Lancaster and longs to be in New York; has plans to see both her mother and her soon; needs to be in New York on March 4 to be admitted to the bar. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing happiness that both he and she have improved their health; has asked Uncle Edward to perform the ceremony probably in August since she preferred her uncle Mr. Nelson but wished not to embarrass her regular Pastor Mr. Davenport; must write “that letter” to James Buchanan to attend the wedding since his brother will be officiating; also wrote Harriet Lane, who denies telling Mrs. Bright about the wedding plans and promises only to say that the wedding will be sometime in the autumn; will ask Uncle Edward when he passes through New York after taking his son to West Point if he will be available either the first or second week of August. Cylindrical, Chinese export porcelain vase with handpainted decoration. There are two sections with detailed images of vignettes of people. May illustrate a story. separated by two brightly colored bands with foliate and curvilinear motifs. Upper and lower borders include similar designs.
