Mochaware bowl of warm tan color overall. Decorative 1.875-inch band 1/2 inch from the top, bordered by two solid brown lines on both sides. Inner 1.375-inch white band is decorated with two brown hairy wavy lines. Circular exterior base has rim.
Tape on base of bowl: "1899/J.B. Morris, Jr." & "MOCHA/ 1B"
2 inch crack/seam front lip to indentures that have firing glaze over them. Some pieces have fallen out to reveal red clay beneath. Crazing in crack area as well as areas near the base on both interior and exterior of the bowl.
Thrown earthenware body with applied pulled handle and 2 piece mold spout and attached bottom. Lid. Blue transfer printed rural scene and ornament around outer top edge, spout, and handle, and lid.
The oldest tobacco shop in the United States, Demuth's was founded in 1770 by Christopher Demuth and remained in the family in the 1980's. With visitors such as Jasper Yeates and James Buchanan, the shop was, and still remains, a staple in the local community.
