Letter from Col. H. Kyd Douglas to Harriet Lane Johnston recounting his attendance at Buchanan’s inauguration as part of an escort from Franklin & Marshall College and his subsequent graduation with a diploma signed by the President, his presence at the John Brown raid, his wounds and the kindness of Henry E. Johnston, and commanding the brigade which fired the last Confederate shot at Appomattox. Envelope addressed to Mrs. Harriet Lane Johnston, Washington, D.C., with 2-cent stamp attached. Written on the envelope: “A beautiful interesting letter from Col. H. Kid Douglas Ans. Feb 14, 97”. Hagerstown, Maryland.

Henry recounting his conversation with the secretary of the cemetery company where James Buchanan Henry’s father and sister are buried informing him that no more interments will be made in the old cemetery and that the tombstones of his father and sister are “their condition is any worse than any of the others”; wonders if Reg has joined the Catholic Church; that Rob has returned to barracks after camp; and will send a picture of his camp a little later. Henry saying that he cannot take part in any more land deals at the moment and thinks little of Greenfield and Kapff; asks after Rob, Will, and Sid; sorry to hear of Randy Hagner’s accident with a gun; telegrams about war with Spain appear in the paper but nothing is definite or authentic; the spring weather is cold, windy, and rainy; and cites the mail dates and always appreciates his mail. Envelope with postmarks and torn where stamp was addressed to J. Buchanan Henry, forwarded from Hotel Maryland, Annapolis, Maryland, United States of America to a hotel in Washington, D.C.
