Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Lane, Esq. praising his appraising of some matting and for acting wisely in not buying Buchanan’s house at this time because of taking too much capital, but Buchanan will not offer it for sale publicly. Written on the blank page is James B. Lane’s reply stating that he does not wish to board but will do so until circumstances improve. He will inform Mr. Meredith that all he wants from the furniture at Wheatland is the matting. On the same stationery is a copy of James Lane’s reply from Lancaster, stating that he wants to exchange housekeeping for a property of his own and that Mr. Fortney wishes Buchanan to inform Mr. Meredith that he will not want any furniture from Wheatland except the matting. “Oh No! I’ll Never Bet,” a humorous poem about the dangers of gambling transcribed from the Niles Intelligencer Democrat newspaper (Niles, Berrien County, Michigan). Transcribed by Thomas Welsh. 4 stanzas, 16 lines. The date of the poem is not identified. Note: Also printed in The Pontiac Weekly Jacksonian, Pontiac, Michigan, 18 December 1840. Not attributed.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Fair condition. No material tears or significant fraying. There are several smudges over a portion of the poem.
