The stoneware mug's body is predominantly white surmounted with a wide green band that is outlined with narrow gilt bands. The handle is also white and outlined with similar gilt bands.

This frog doorstop serves as an iconic symbol of James Buchanan's attachment to his favorite spring at his Wheatland farm, and was donated because it was an appropriate piece.
Lignum vitas wood caster with round, bowl-like top, pierced for shaking out pounce. Base is ring-turned tapers smaller to broad top, flat bottom. Small, shallow dotted pattern in two bands near bottom. Lip at top has thin groove. Top screws onto base that would be filled with pounce, which is a fine powder made from powdered cuttlefish bone. Pounce was used both to dry ink and to sprinkle on a rough writing surface to make it smooth enough for writing.
Esther 'Hetty' Parker, James Buchanan's housekeeper, chose this among several other household items that Buchanan noted she was to be allowed to choose after his death. Miss Hetty gave this to the daughter of her neighbor. Miss Steckman donated this to the Wheatland collection in 1938.
Sheraton-inspired mahogany veneer night table with satinwood inlay accents that outline the apron, drawer and keyhole, as well as the legs. The table top has eight sides and surmounts four saber legs that also support a lower inward-curved shelf.
Fraktur presentation piece for Susanna Netzlin (Nissley?) Pressure-mounted on tan matboard and framed in small frame.
Watercolor and ink on rectangular, laid paper, done in dark brown red and yellow. Three bars of color at perimeter in red, yellow and dark green create outside border. Filling top half of inner space is the name of "Susanna Netzlin" written in large red letters, incorporating leafy vines with three different flowers.
Bottom half of page is filled with seven lines of German religious verse. Another leafy vine fills the bottom space adorned with four different flowers.

Donor, Mr. Clarke E. Hess of Lititz, PA, describes this page as a presentation piece done for Susanna Nissley (?) probably in Warwick Twp. Hess cites another example of this unknown artist's work in the book Pennsylvania German Fraktur and Color Drawings by Landis Valley Associates, 1969, plate #48 (a vorschrift done in 1769).

Paper embrittled and very weak. Multiple breaks, holes and tears. Large holes at center of dark brown border on right side and bottom. Multiple areas of paint loss. White fibers attached to red border at left side and bottom. Soiled and stained overall. Paper edges are uneven with minor losses, especially corners at top and bottom left. Horizontal fold across center.
Birth record, masterfully hand-done in German on laid paper. for Maria Siegrist by unidentified artist known as the Leacock Twp. Artist. Executed in ink with watercolored decoration of dark blue and red. Placed in heavy flat brown-stained frame.
Central text block has twelve lines of beautifully executed printed letters, with magnified, elaborate initial letter of subject's name done in fraktur style and decorated with tulips and scrolling. Two vertical panels flank text block, filled with tulip trees growing out of striped pitchers. Top narrow panel decorated with symmetrical arrangement of similar tulip plant sideways from center.
Text begins with the name of subject, Maria Siegrist, born April 22, 1794 in Lampeter Twp. The remainder is religious in nature.
Earnests note paper has an "IB" watermark. The Earnests indicate ten pieces known by this artist. Most of his work is birth records with no baptisms, indicating he did work for the Mennonite community. Six of his works are for families in Leacock Twp. (thus his moniker) and two are for families in Lampeter Twp.
Acid-burn darkening overall; liquid staining along right edge, esp. at pitcher, one spot on last word of text and strong staining along left edge throughout tuliptree. Hole of approx. 1/8" near upper edge to right of center, smaller hole along left edge 2.5" below corner; twin pin holes at center of top edge. Minor losses along right edge.
Backboard is acid-free matboard. Removed original wood backboard & replaced it with regular foam core board.
Fraktur is a Vorschrift made for Eva Kauffman & attributed to schoolmaster Christian Alsdorff. Horizontal design is hand drawn, lettered and colored on wove paper. Alsdorff uses black iron gall ink with red and black watercolors. Very busy design has lettering surrounded by multiple flowers and leaves.
First 3 lines of text are oversize, esp. the first. Appears to be "Ihr Kinder Send / Bedenck Deinen Schopfer in deiner Ill / Gehorsam Luren Eltern Dann das ist hillis Ehre Vatter." Nine lines of German script follow, and finally a last line of numbers. An area in the bottom right corner is boxed off by a red line border. Several lines written there are "Diese Vorschrifft Gehoret / Eva Kauffman in / ??????? Schullerin 2 Merz 1793."
This design is similar to that of the Vorschift belonging to Clarke Hess pictured in Papers for Birth Dayes, p. 51.
Formerly known as the "Earl Township Artist", Alsdorff was a schoolmaster at the Hempfield School and the Earl School in Lancaster County. Kauffman families did live in the area between Marietta Pike and Rt. 283. The 1869 Directory of Lancaster Co. has 18 Kauffmans listed in East Hempfield Twp and 15 in West Hempfield Twp. None were listed in the Earl townships. On the same day (March 2nd) Eva Kauffman received hers, Alsdorff presented a similar Vorschrift to Jacob Brubacher, noting he was a student at the Hempfield School. Eva most certainly was too.
Mounted in a dark wood frame with beveled face, white window mat. Significant pieces of the fraktur are hidden behind the matboard.

Breaking and broken at fold lines; the vertical center line appears to be completely separated. It has two 1.5" long pieces of cellophane tape at top and bottom. Large ragged hole centered on fold line. Lots of brown stains cover much of surface. Iron gall ink has bled outward from motifs have strong concentrations of the ink. Watercolors are alligatored and individual pieces are cupping and lifting. In need of conservation.

Infilled and decorated around textblock by Speyer; cross-legged angel at top, pelicans feeding young at sides and flowers at sides and bottom. Watercolors are red, blue, yellow, green and brown.

Conserved by CCAHA in 1989 (see report in file). Hinged into window mat & back mat. Relaced in its original frame using UF-3 Plexiglas and acid-free cardboard on reverse with a taped mylar dust shield.

SA firefighter's belt marked Shiffler 7. A 2.325in wide black leather belther belt bound around edges in freen leather with a zig zag edge on the front center cut out portion revelas a red background with raised white letters "SH FFLER HOSE." There is a 2.75in wide moveable slide with edges bound in green and red cut out background with raised "7." A 9in leather strip attached to back holds slide. A 10in long x .75in wide belt with 10 holes is attached 14in from the rounded end witha small buckle at the opposite end. Taped to back, handwritten in ink "J./_ G. Goodman."
White metal helmet plate with brass banner with "SHIFFLER" at top, 3in high "7" in center, and banner with "S. FIre Co." at bottom. Names and numbers attached with 7 nuts in the back.
