Letter from James Buchanan to Mrs. Sarah H. Porter replying to her request for a lieutenancy for her son George since the President will fill all vacancies with veterans of the Mexican War. A clerkship is also unlikely because two of her sons already hold appointments in the government. There are no vacancies on his staff. With envelope and seal.

Shows General Taylor’s position, the Road to Point Isabel, Matamoros on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande, and Fort Polk on Point Isabel.
