Letter from Harriet Lane to James Buchanan expressing her displeasure with Rockaway which is just as it was the previous summer. She reminds him of the medals she earned at school and asks him to take her to historic Northern towns when Congress adjourns. She says that Mr. Walker is coming but Eskridge is not, remembers the hospitality of Mrs. Dallas in Philadelphia, and asks of the health of Miss Hetty. Signed Harriette. Letter from Harriet Lane to James Buchanan begging him to visit her and take her away. She praises a concert given by pianist [Maurice] Strakosch and Miss Northall and urges him to purchase a piano like it. She advises him to direct his letters to the Marine Pavilion Rockaway to differentiate it from the town of Rockaway on Long Island. Signed Harriette L. One of four saucers. Inside curved shape features a gilt band along the rim with a wide band of pink hue decor bordered by a smaller diameter gilt band closer to the saucer's center. Center of the saucer features a gilt star burst decor.

In 1995 the JBF staff assigned the Object ID W.95.69.2 to this Compote as a FIC probably because original paper records were not found.
In March 2023 the paper file has been found that identifies Lois Cassatt Thayer as the donor in 1935. Mrs. Thayer was the daughter to Alexander Cassatt and his wife, Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt. Maria Lois Buchanan was the daughter to Rev. Dr. Edward Y. Buchanan, the youngest sibling to President James Buchanan.

Draft of a letter from James Buchanan addressing the inquiry of whether he would be interested in becoming a candidate for nomination of Governor before the approaching Democratic State Convention with the understanding that the Democrats of York County will nominate him at their upcoming County Meeting. Buchanan outlines his reasons for not wanting to run for Governor. 20 July 1848.

Handwritten letter from James Buchanan to Thomas Welsh informing him that his nomination as Second Lieutenant for gallantry and good conduct as a private volunteer in Mexico has been forwarded by the President to the Senate. Note: President is James K. Polk, Buchanan is Secretary of State.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.
Had been in a heavy wooden frame with wood backing. The letter itself shows some staining and is fragile.

Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to James Buchanan or to William L. Marcy and poem
Description
Handwritten draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to James Buchanan or to William L. Marcy requesting instructions on how to proceed following his appointment as 2nd Lieutenant; the same draft document also contains remarks (prepared for some meeting) advocating a vigorous prosecution of the war; the document ends with a poem evidently written by Welsh summarizing his feelings about going back into war, a wounded veteran ready for further sacrifice to secure an honorable and lasting peace.
