Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to one of his daughters. From Waterford, Virginia. Letter expresses his pleasure at learning that Lillie has recovered from her illness, his disappointment at not being able to visit home, and provides some details of life in the camp. Text includes a description of the location of the town of Waterford, noting that the inhabitants are Quaker and friendly. Welsh expresses his disappointment in not hearing more from his family, but writes of missing his family very much.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp near Fredericksburg regarding George Anne’s health and rumors that they would be going to Harpers Ferry to face the Confederate Army. Also, President Lincoln and Governor Curtin were expected to review the camp. He states that the food rations are getting better with provisions of bread, pork, peas, fresh meat, potatoes and onions. He ends the letter stating that the paymaster would be around to give their pay.

Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.

Pelouze, Assistant Adjutant General. Note: Major General Dix was in command of the Department from June 6, 1862 to April 6, 1863.

The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.
The George Steinman Papers, Series 2 is a collection of original correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera primarily compiled by George Steinman. The contents of Series 2 represent Lancaster city and county events, prominent citizens, buildings, monuments, churches, cemeteries, schools, and businesses. Most of what Steinman collected relates to 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania, highlighting Lancaster and Philadelphia. One of the key events highlighted is the Revolutionary war; with documents and images related to Philadelphia, George Washington, the Atlee family, and General Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Riot and to various buildings in early Lancaster; including but not limited to the Old Jail, the British Prison, and Postlethwaite's Tavern. Also included in the collection is currency printed by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1764, and Confederate States currency and bonds.
