Riddle stating that he will sell the Shepherdstown Bridge stock in compliance with Virginia laws and will dispense the first installment of the funds to Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Winter and Mrs. Nicklin according to paperwork provided by Mr. Swarr; stating that he has visited the Lane lands in Bedford County and found that one tract is worthless but the others have coal and are near a railroad; quoting from a letter written by Charles B. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Letter from James Buchanan to W. Kennedy, critiquing a letter W. Kennedy wrote, saying that it had “too much good sense and sober argument to produce any sensible effect” when it came to the current state of public affairs. He also says that he will be able to assist W. Kennedy with a loan, bond, and mortgage of $3000. He writes to transmit them to Hiram B. Swarr Esq. of Lancaster, his man of transfer. 5 September 1863.
