The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter to H. B. Swarr from John Cadwalader acknowledging receipt of the Intelligencer files for 1827, 1828 and 1829 and some from the Washington Daily Chronicle; recalling James Buchanan’s telling him of the conversation he had with Colonel Benton; recalling James Buchanan’s espousal of federalism in about 1820 and that General Cameron had referred to it negatively; asking on which party ticket James Buchanan was elected to Congress; and requesting newspaper copies of any speeches James Buchanan delivered in the state legislature. Marriage applications completed by the bride and groom contain the names, ages, places of birth, current residences, occupation of groom, if either party had been married before and the results of that union, signatures of applicants, if African-American, and degree of kinship, if any. Parental consent forms, filed with marriage applications, were completed by parent or guardian of under-age applicants and contain the name of parent or guardian, place of current residence, residence of child or ward, and signature of parent or guardian. Arranged chronologically by year and then by license number within that year. Box 2 has additional files for 1895 that were not able to be included in Box 1. Files may contain both an application and consent form or forms, an application, or a consent form or forms.
