Letter to Henry E. Johnston from H. B. Swarr requesting the delivery of Mrs. Johnston’s estate papers to Wheatland as soon as convenient; stating that in his letter of March 24th he had defended Edward Young Buchanan as co-executor using words copied from one of James Buchanan’s truest friends, a gentleman known to and respected by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston; explaining that his request for Mrs. Johnston to suggest a biographer for James Buchanan was meant to “hasten its accomplishment;” and stating his wish to perform his duty to the estate and legatees of the deceased while maintaining “ kindly relations with all.” Handwritten by unknown and signed by H. B. Swarr. Lancaster.

Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr gratefully acknowledging receipt of the semi-annual interest on his Russell mortgages; wishing to discuss Mr. Wiley’s mortgage; noting that Miss Hetty and Mrs. Dunham are visiting and that Miss Hetty has informed him that the Johnstons are planning a trip to Montreal; requesting information on what the Johnstons are planning to do about the law suit; and noting how unseemly it appeared for African-American men to be voting alongside white men at the polls in Frankford that morning. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr stating that he would certainly be present for giving depositions in connection with the exceptions to Mr. Swift’s report, were it not that his health requires him to avoid all excitement, but he will send relevant documents; denying that Mrs. Johnston offered to contribute double the sum that Rev. Edward Young Buchanan or James Buchanan Henry might contribute to the fund for the biography, but instead offered to unite with Rev. Buchanan or Mr. Henry in contributing equally the sum of $5000 each; and suggesting that the $5000 for the fund should properly remain in the estate, since it was mentioned in their second account which was duly confirmed. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr indicating he could not find the copy of the agreement sent to Mrs. Johnston which she returned unsigned; supposing that the Johnstons are the only ones required to make depositions on Saturday; reporting that Mr. Preston brought letters from Mr. Capen, G. S. Hillard, Judge Payne, and Colonel Greene supporting his bid to become James Buchanan’s biographer; noting that another possible candidate for biographer is H. B. Dawson, editor of the New York Historical Magazine, who has written several articles favorable to James Buchanan, and asking for news of what the Johnstons swear to at the deposition. 327, 329 &331 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
