Volume I - Covers the Revolutionary War from Lexington to Yorktown surrender
Volume II - Begins with the defeat of General Harman by native Americans in the Ohio Territory in 1790 and concludes with General Scott's campaign in 1847 in the Mexican War.
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr indicating he could not find the copy of the agreement sent to Mrs. Johnston which she returned unsigned; supposing that the Johnstons are the only ones required to make depositions on Saturday; reporting that Mr. Preston brought letters from Mr. Capen, G. S. Hillard, Judge Payne, and Colonel Greene supporting his bid to become James Buchanan’s biographer; noting that another possible candidate for biographer is H. B. Dawson, editor of the New York Historical Magazine, who has written several articles favorable to James Buchanan, and asking for news of what the Johnstons swear to at the deposition. 327, 329 &331 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr with a receipt for his commission on Harriet Lane Johnston’s interest; stating that he has asked a written opinion from P. McCall Esq. as to whether Mr. Reed’s children would have a legal claim to the $5000 bequeathed to their mother if it is decided not to appoint Mr. Reed as James Buchanan’s biographer; mentioning various problems with Mr. Dawson and Mr. Preston as biographer with no suggestions from Mr. O’Connor worth mentioning; and enclosing releases from all the parties he has paid.
