Printed version of the court case between the executors of James Buchanan’s estate and Henry E. Johnston and Harriet L. Johnston, his wife, concerning the papers left by Buchanan, some delivered to William B. Reed for the purpose of writing a biography (as directed by the will, but Reed refused to write the biography), the alleged mis-handling by E. Y. Buchanan of a large number of family papers in the possession of the defendants, and the unwillingness of E. Y. Buchanan to destroy certain papers as directed by the will. Lancaster.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Register of pastoral duties of Edward Y. Buchanan listing baptisms, marriages, burials, etc. by date; includes dates, places, and texts of sermons, etc. One volume bound in marbled paper with leather spine 105, [3] pages. Removed from endpaper a note by Edward Young Buchanan calculating the length of his marriage to his “darling wife A E.” 31 October 1875-7 April 1891.

Encased ambrotype, circa 1865, of Rosine Etta (Hubley) Herr (1850-1889). Seated in plaid dress by a column, in a composition case with gold trim and lined with red velvet.
Hong Neok Woo in religious clothing - Hong Neok Woo, a young Chinese immigrant who lived in Lancaster from 1855 to 1864. He was brought here by Dr. John S. Messersmith, naval surgeon on the frigate Susquehanna, flagship of the squadron which had opened the ports of Japan to the world's commerce. Commodore Peary's vessels had stopped at Shanghai during their voyage. Woo lived for a time with Dr. Messersmith at his home, 40 North Lime Street. He learned the printing trade at the Lancaster Examiner and Herald office. There he met Walter Kieffer, a reporter on the paper (and later City Editor), and became a friend of him an dof the Kieffer family. On Sept. 22, 1860, Woo became an American citizen, the first Asian to be naturalized in Lancaster. He served briefly as a member of Comapny I, 50th Regiment, PA Volunteers. In 1864, Mr. Woo returned to China and was ordained to the diaconate and priesthood in China. While in Lancaster he had been a faithful attendant at the sevices of St. James Episcopal Church. He died on August 18, 1919, and was buried in Westgate Cemetery, the oldest Christian burial ground in Shanghai.
