Swarr requesting the delivery of Mrs. Johnston’s estate papers to Wheatland as soon as convenient; stating that in his letter of March 24th he had defended Edward Young Buchanan as co-executor using words copied from one of James Buchanan’s truest friends, a gentleman known to and respected by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston; explaining that his request for Mrs. Johnston to suggest a biographer for James Buchanan was meant to “hasten its accomplishment;” and stating his wish to perform his duty to the estate and legatees of the deceased while maintaining “ kindly relations with all.” Handwritten by unknown and signed by H. Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 6 Papers of Hiram B. Swarr, Series 1 contains correspondence of Hiram Behm Swarr. The many letters to Harriet Lane Johnston and Henry E. Johnston primarily pertain to the settlement of James Buchanan's estate and work on Buchanan's biography. The dates in this collection range from 1841 to 1887.
Subseries 1 has letters from Hiram B. Swarr to Aristides Welch, Augustus Schell, Harriet Lane Johnston, Henry Elliot Johnston, and William B. Reed.
Subseries 2 has letters to Hiram B. Swarr from A. J. Glossbrenner, Edmund Jennings Lee, John R. Blake, William B. Reed, Samuel Magaw, Chambers McKibbin, John M.Cooper, Isaac E. Hiester, John Cadwalader, Benjamin Bausman, and his nephew, Simeon Toby.
Admin/Biographical History
Hiram Behm Swarr (1821-1896) was born in Londonderry Township in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. His father was Jacob Swarr, a prominent manufacturer of Lebanon County at the time. His mother was from the prominent Behm family. He became a lawyer instead of following in his father's footsteps. In December 1847, H.B. Swarr married Fanny T. Swarr. Together they had three children: Charles, Sallie, and Mary.
Swarr was admitted to the bar in 1847, and worked in Lancaster County for nearly fifty years. He was a member of the Democratic Party, and was also appointed the Chairman of the Democratic County Committee. He was a Democratic delegate for congress from his district in 1868 and was appointed Postmaster General from 1857 to 1861. Additionally, he belonged to the Lancaster School Board, the Board of Censors, the Law Library Association, and was one of the founders of the Lancaster Bar Association.
Swarr was also a close friend of President James Buchanan, handled many of Buchanan's financial affairs and investments, and was appointed co-executor of James Buchanan's estate in 1868.

Swarr regretting that the weather prevented him from coming to Lancaster to attend the funeral of Mr. Wharton; hoping that the matter of the mortgage has been straightened out with Mr. McMurtrie and the purchaser; returning receipts for money received on behalf of John Weaver and Mr. Johnston’s letter; replying at length to Mr. Johnston’s objections about the housing of James Buchanan’s papers; advising no reference to Judge Black’s alleged opinion on the value of the papers; advising no reply to Mr. Johnston’s request for suggestions for the author of James Buchanan’s biography, except in noting that Mr. Shunk is unacceptable; advising warning that funds might need to be withheld from the estate if Mr. Johnston keeps threatening legal action; raising the suggestion that presidential papers now at Wheatland be removed to Mr. Swarr’s home; and asking that his name not be mentioned in his reply to Mr. Johnston. Swarr thanking him for his resumé of his latest correspondence with the Johnstons; saying that Mrs. Johnston has no power to prevent the removal of the papers from Wheatland and leaving the legal steps necessary to remove the papers to Swarr; denying that he and his daughter Annie left papers at Wheatland in confusion after sorting out important ones for Mr. Reed, although agreeing that they are now in confusion; noting the absurdity of Mrs. Johnston suggesting that increasing the biographical fund to $20,000 would in any way assure the rapid acquisition of a suitable biographer; and sympathizing with Mr. Swarr on having to correspond with such unreasonable persons as the Johnstons. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr informing him that Judge Black had asked to meet with James Buchanan Henry and himself, but that he could not because Mr. Henry had left and because he is opposed to Judge Black’s appointment as James Buchanan’s biographer, because he disapproves of Judge Black’s letter to the New York Herald in January 1870. This letter concerned the “consternation & grief” which the Cabinet felt on hearing James Buchanan’s response to the South Carolina Commissioners. In fact the changes in President Buchanan’s “views and proceedings” were caused by the secessionists in Charleston. Oxford Church Parsonage, Philadelphia.

Swarr, his first since leaving America in the autumn, describing their travels, the Carnival in Rome, not seeing the Pope, but catching a glimpse of Victor Emmanuel, all in crowds of tourists from America and England; reporting that his son William became ill in Paris and will come for rest in Italy; noting that John Lane must have reached his majority and received his inheritance; expressing satisfaction that the Foltz case was settled favorably; and asking for new information to be sent to him in London on whether Judge Black intends to write a history of James Buchanan’s presidency; and sending good wishes to Mrs. Swarr, Mrs. Kremer, Miss Mary, Charles, Mr. Swift, and Miss Hetty. Swarr stating that he would certainly be present for giving depositions in connection with the exceptions to Mr. Swift’s report, were it not that his health requires him to avoid all excitement, but he will send relevant documents; denying that Mrs. Johnston offered to contribute double the sum that Rev. Edward Young Buchanan or James Buchanan Henry might contribute to the fund for the biography, but instead offered to unite with Rev. Buchanan or Mr. Henry in contributing equally the sum of $5000 each; and suggesting that the $5000 for the fund should properly remain in the estate, since it was mentioned in their second account which was duly confirmed.
