Summary: Upon the death of Lancaster's General John Reynolds at the Battle of Gettysburg, a gold ring on a chain was found around his neck. It was inscribed "Dear Kate." The Reynolds family had not known that Reynoldshad planned to marry Catherine Mary Hewitt, "Kate". They did not even know of her until she visited Reynolds sister's home in Philadelphia to view his body. Ms Hewitt and General Reynolds had planned that if he did not survive the war, she would enter a convent. She followed through with the plan and entered a convent in Emittsburg,Pa. She left the service to the church 5 years later. The writer of this article could not determine what then happened to Kate.

He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Summary: This journal article, written in 1923 , provides the history of the "Survivor's Club " which was comprised of Civil War veterans in Lancaster, PA. The survivors met yearly for a dinner beginning in 1868. The article gives a brief description of each meeting through 1922. The last of those entries was made by Captain P.L. Sprecher, the last Survivor. The article also gives a biographical sketch of each member of the Survivor's Club.
