Shannon recounting “slovenly & unlawyer like” handling of the coal lands matter, advising her to consult Mr. Jenkins on the matter, a letter from Mrs. Hunter about Virginia heirs, a letter from Mr. Capens relating that James Lane will sell out for $10,000, and his arranging to pay her note at the Farmers Bank; and finally Eliza left, leaving only Mary on the domestic staff. Opinion of Judge Black regarding provisions of James Buchanan’s will: canes are not included in the category of wearing apparel; the sum of $12,000, the valuation of Wheatland in the will, is to be deducted from Harriet Lane Johnston’s one fourth of the general estate, any pecuniary value of James Buchanan’s papers must be divided among the legatees, but the executors may use their judgment in distributing papers of only sentimental value ; and a copy of only the canes and papers provisions in another hand.
