Transcription of letter to Annie Welsh from Samuel Wright, Burnet House, Cincinnati, Ohio. Letter recounts the last hours of the life of Thomas Welsh as seen through the eyes of the writer and provides details regarding removal of the body to Columbia and initial efforts to account for his personal belongings.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Samuel Wright to E. S. Young (brother of Annie Welsh) describing final arrangements
Description
Handwritten letter E. S. Young, brother of Annie Welsh, from Samuel Wright, Headquarters Ninth Army Corps, Lexington, Kentucky. Letter expresses Wright's regret in not being able to personally direct final accounting of Welsh's personal belongings as requested by Annie Welsh. Provides details regarding the sale of Welsh's horse and apologizes for loss of Welsh's sword in transit to Cincinnati. Expresses concern over the health of Mrs. Welsh. Note: Addressed to C. S. Young, but most likely intended for E. S. Young, brother of Annie Young Welsh.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane advising her to ask Mrs. Kennedy to appoint H. B. Swarr her attorney to draw up estate papers; admitting that he opened the enclosed letter from Mr. Florey in which he wants to close a loan to her but with conditions; thinking that the influence of Parson Rosenmiller on Dr. Lane would affect adversely the estates of the family; asking that she find out from James Henry whether New York paid interest in gold or “depreciated paper”; finding pleasure in visiting his Chester County farm; and rejoicing at Mrs. Henry’s recovery. advising her to send all correspondence about her cousin’s, Dr. Lane’s, estate to him as a precautionary manner; recalling his pleasant dining evening with the Hiesters even though she wore a “long thick cloth Frock on the hottest day of the Season”; saying that Miss Hetty suggested inviting James Henry and his wife to visit; and stating that the case of Mr. Lane’s estate has not been decided.
