Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston welcoming her home from Malagas; admonishing her to return directly home to her husband and leave the glitter of public life for one of “social and domestic values”; family chatter including lack of permanent servants, but Miss Hetty copes, Peter is temporary and Lizzie is getting married; Aunt Rebecca and Mr. Van Dyke to visit; the Nevins are infrequent visitors; Mrs. Grubb threw a party without the Norrises but the Misses Lightners; Reverend William Speer to preach for a fund-raising event for Mr. Powell; and a brief visit to Governor Porter. Letter from Harriet Lane to Lily Macalester chatting about a letter from Lily’s Aunt Lathrop, the marriage of Miss Hayes and Bowman, the death of Uncle Edward’s child, Lily’s friend Samuel, Mary McKennan, Miss Muhlenberg of Reading, a coming trip through several cities of Pennsylvania and perhaps Virginia Springs with Uncle, Mr. Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Macey at Wheatland, Mr. Longenecker in North Carolina to visit a gold mine, an exhibition in Lititz to be attended by “all of us” spearheaded by Eskridge, Miss Dow, the “romance” of Miss Hetty and Mr. Bear, Mr. Hamilton (ex-minister to Denmark), and the annoyance and noise of the boys. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston discussing plans for the summer for her family and him; saying that at 76 years of age, he preferred to stay home; expressing happiness that he and Mrs. Lane are on good terms, but the boys are too old for him to control; looking forward to the visit of Mr. Schell on his birthday; lamenting the fact that he has “neither waiting nor cook” but that Lizzie is a tolerable cook; admitting that Peter’s participation in a “Negro riot at the door of the Negro church and is eluding the police”; reporting that Dr. Carpenter was not hurt very much but is hoping to become Collector of Internal Revenue; saying that Miss Hetty is better and will “be on a crutch” soon; saying that the Swarrs reported that Emily Baker will not be married until fall and that Mr. Baker, usually very talkative, has said nothing on the subject but has added A. Griffeth as a partner; reporting that Captain Magaw has a good command now; reporting sadly that Willie has the consumption and his sisters are nursing him; and saw Mrs. Forney at Mrs. Porter’s funeral and that the Nevins had visited her. Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston chastising her for her “slight despondency” and offering advice to avoid it; saying that Judge Black and Mr. Shunk arrived late and sure Mr. Shunk can handle the work; expressing sorrow that business forced him to cut short his visit to her (accompanied by Becky) and forego the one to Philadelphia; noting that he has seen only Wilberforce of the Nevin family; hoping that no one including Wilberforce will vote for Geary but for his choice, Clymer; noting his visit to her sister seemed to produce an improvement in her feelings for him and happy that the boys will be sent to New Hampshire; expressing joy that she has the silk handkerchiefs and stockings; quoting from a letter from Laura Pleasonton that Mrs. Ellis was in New York “fat & well". With envelope addressed to 120 Park Street, Baltimore. Annotation on envelope: “Oct 2/66 Just before Bby was born & before dear Uncle’s visit to us. Judge Black and dear Uncle’s life.” Wheatland.

Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane Johnston expressing joy that she and her son are doing well; asking her to purchase a Christmas gift of jewelry for Becky Shunk; commenting on the coming holidays when Harriet Buchanan’s “lover” will be home from his divinity studies, but that she might find a more suitable match in Baltimore unless she is engaged; really upset at the snubbing of Mrs. Lane and even his interest in her children has “vanished in a great degree”; and saying he had an agreeable visit to brother Edward’s family, Lois has regained her health, and he was not dissatisfied with the abandonment of Henrietta by Cecil.
