Summary
The most-imported commodity, and a highly valued one, textiles were used for bedding, bed curtains, clothing, household linens, window curtains, upholstery, and floor covering. This book illustrates samples from collections around the world, as well as drawings and engravings of the time. "Mr Hyatt was an abolitionist and inventor. In his opposition to slavery, Hyatt organized the efforts of abolitionists in Kansas to have the territory admitted to the Union as a free-state and campaigned for the federal government to aid Kansans afflicted by drought. Hyatt befriended John Brown and provided Brown with financial support; following the raid on Harpers Ferry, Hyatt was investigated by a committee of the United States Senate." [from Wikipedia]
This journal article describes how an African male came to be sold into slavery in America and how he became a member of the Moravian church community in Bethlehem , Pa. Also included is the autobiography of this man named Andrew which as a member of the church he was required to write. While he remained in slave status, his membership in the church provided him a life more normal than a slave would ordinarily endure.
