Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson trying to get over a “large dinner”; looking forward to next week when he hopes to bring his yacht to Annapolis for a sail to Baltimore and back if he gets the weekend off and the weather is fine; the President granted a short reprieve to Barret, who should have been hanged today; wonders of Miss Emily’s sore throat is better; hopes she will be able to accompany Miss Ella to Washington so that he and she can see each other every night and would be her first visit to the capital since their engagement; Mr. Magraw came from Baltimore to have dinner with him and hopes Magraw and a ”sparkling young widow” will soon make a match; has received an invitation to General Henderson’s daughter’s wedding, the groom, Mr. du Pont, is a good friend of his.

Lane (Harriet Lane’s brother) in Lancaster where all are kind, but he doesn’t like Lancaster and longs to be in New York; has plans to see both her mother and her soon; needs to be in New York on March 4 to be admitted to the bar. Henry to Louisa Anderson commenting on her aunt’s letter stating that both mother and child are doing well; sent a letter to a friend enclosing a photograph; the German of Parker was successful and Jessie stayed until late; visited Miss McKenzie and likes her very much; shot a rabbit and partridge; sending her a paper from Orvis in Jacksonville who published part of James Buchanan Henry’s letter; and the economy is so poor that he will not fill any orders but hopes next year will be better.
