Description
Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.

Excerpts of correspondence from James Buchanan, Sr. and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan to their son James Buchanan from 1809 through 1826 regarding Buchanan’s early political career. Letters from 1809 through 1813 are written out twice. There are also two envelopes where the excerpcts were kept. 1809-1826.

Swarr saying that he has enrolled his nephew John Weaver in Claymont School and asking reimbursement for fees and clothing; asking reimbursement from the estate for his travel and expenses on behalf of the estate; needing an advance of a few thousand dollars because three of his children probably will be married in the near future but asking that no one else be told of the coming marriages; asking for $100 each for his niece Maria B. Weaver and her brother James B. Weaver; expecting the wines to sell well; hoping to meet with Mr. Howell in Laurel Hill; enclosing a note that Mr. Henry received from William and John O’Brien; planning to discuss the sale of the securities when he is in Lancaster; and having received the farm advertisements. Swarr explaining his objections to Mr. Howell’s proposal for the monument; noting that Mr. Diller’s estimate for the railing is higher than expected; noting that Mr. Pearce’s bill for John Weaver’s education must be paid soon, but more details are needed regarding Dr. Cardera’s bill for treating John; acquiescing to a remittance for Mrs. Dunham requested by Dr. Yates, but requiring written proof of her Uncle’s intention to forego charging her interest on her bond; asking for a copy of Judge Black’s opinion contained in Mr. Johnston’s letter; and cautioning against providing Mr. Johnston with their entire proceedings.
