Letter from James Buchanan to James B. Lane, Esq. praising his appraising of some matting and for acting wisely in not buying Buchanan’s house at this time because of taking too much capital, but Buchanan will not offer it for sale publicly. Written on the blank page is James B. Lane’s reply stating that he does not wish to board but will do so until circumstances improve. He will inform Mr. Meredith that all he wants from the furniture at Wheatland is the matting. On the same stationery is a copy of James Lane’s reply from Lancaster, stating that he wants to exchange housekeeping for a property of his own and that Mr. Fortney wishes Buchanan to inform Mr. Meredith that he will not want any furniture from Wheatland except the matting. Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his parents
Description
Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to father and mother from Fairfax Court House, describing sleeping conditions, the battle nearby, and their own battle lines. The upper corner of the letter is stamped with a soldier holding up a flag in one hand and a musket in the other.
On the first page and last there are two thin, even tears about 2 inches apart starting from 1 inch down from the top of the page. Along the crease, between pages two and three, there is a slight rip about a half an inch from the bottom.
