A letter from J. Ridenour, Jr. to James Buchanan. Ridenour explains how glad he was to hear Buchanan’s opinions on the war while he was visiting him at Wheatland. After leaving Wheatland, Ridenour spoke with Mr. Hamilton in Lancaster, who told him about Buchanan’s differing views on the war and the Confederacy. J. Ridenour, Jr. asks James Buchanan to confirm his notes on their conversation at Wheatland, that Buchanan did not agree with the Confederacy and would never have signed a compromise had he been President during the war, and that Mr. Hamilton was wrong. Lee stating that he is legally the president of the Virginia and Maryland Bridge Company; noting that during the war Mr. David Billmyer, a director, managed what was left of the Company and has been attempting to purchase additional shares; and suggesting that Mr. Swarr enquire of Mr. Billmyer about dividends due to Mr. Lane’s estate and asking that he inform Mr. Lee of the answer. Letter from Thomas Welsh to Alice Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. From Newport News, Virginia. Letter details Welsh's frustration over not receiving a letter from home and not being able to secure leave to visit home. Shares news about various soldiers from Columbia under his command and the return of a deserter to his previous command. Inquires about health of the family and to give each child a kiss from him.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from camp, in which he describes being on the front near the Tennessee River with the enemy before them. They were low on rations and artillery because the weather had been rainy and the wagons are stuck in the mud. They had already captured many prisoners and the way they were traveling in to Tullahoma could lead to more captures. Complains of marching too much.

Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. From Antietam Creek, Maryland. Letter details the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, and his frustration with the credit he feels his brigade deserves going to other units. He expresses thorough disgust with the management of the army and the way the battle was conducted (evidently a reference to General McClellan).

Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to daughter, Lillie Welsh. From James Island, South Carolina. Letter thanks Lillie for writing, tells Lillie how much he misses her and her siblings and intends "to hurry home as soon as this war is over." Encloses money to take Effie for ice cream. Note: James Island is located near Charleston.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description
Handwritten fragment of a letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. Marked "Evening" at top, most likely page 2 of a letter. Letter includes thoughts about his family; fear of being forgotten by his kids; story of capturing a Rebel soldier at South Mountain and how he identified with that soldier having a similar family situation.

Description
Handwritten transcription of letter from John B. Lebkicher to brother from Camp 7 Penna. Discusses the Confederate Army moving into Pennsylvania and how he thinks that Pennsylvania is unprepared. States that he has enough men to capture Lee and his army. Also, two men were hanged for beating a union worker to death. Transcription only.

Letter from Edward Lebkicher to his father from camp near Hagerstown, he traveled from Harrisburg to Shippensburg and they had not stopped marching since. The Confederate Army had a rifle fight in Hagerstown and also held up the railroad from Shippensburg to Chambersburg, hence the reason he had to walk to Hagerstown. He ends the letter stating that the cost of bread is eight cents a loaf.

Letter from Edwin M. Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from Camp near Fifth Dam regarding the lack of provisions. He had been living off of black coffee and a small amount of salted pork. However, the wagon with provisions had came in that evening. Their camp picketed and the Confederate camp picketed on the other side. Ends the letter asking his father to send stamps.

Letter from William Henry Lebkicher to his father, David McGran Lebkicher, from camp at Waterloo, regarding the marching from Hillsborough to Sneekers Gap, then to Bloomfield, then to Upperville, then to Piedmont Station where they skirmished with the Confederate Army, then to Orleans and to Waterloo (7 miles from Warrenton Junction). He mentions that he saw Capt. Grass of the 99th, General Burnside, and General McClellan.
