Swarr requesting the delivery of Mrs. Johnston’s estate papers to Wheatland as soon as convenient; stating that in his letter of March 24th he had defended Edward Young Buchanan as co-executor using words copied from one of James Buchanan’s truest friends, a gentleman known to and respected by Mr. and Mrs. Johnston; explaining that his request for Mrs. Johnston to suggest a biographer for James Buchanan was meant to “hasten its accomplishment;” and stating his wish to perform his duty to the estate and legatees of the deceased while maintaining “ kindly relations with all.” Handwritten by unknown and signed by H. Letter from Charles M. Howell to Mrs. Henry E. Johnston explaining that the weight of James Buchanan’s tomb will be carried by an interior brick arch; asserting that the plan differs only slightly from the wishes of Mr. Buchanan, unlike the draft which he received from Mr. Johnston which is very pretty; and that H. B. Swarr and E. Y. Buchanan have approved the plan. Lancaster.

Swarr agreeing to the payment of the taxes on Wheatland but thinks the assessment was too high; inquires about the status of James Buchanan’s canes; noting that Charles Macalester was in Philadelphia and that the friends of the President were indignant at how the Messrs. Henry and Buchanan treated Mrs. Johnston, apparently over the handling of the “dismantling” of Wheatland and disposal of the portrait of the Prince of Wales; inquires about the progress of settling James Buchanan’s estate and offers to give advice; inquires about the status of Eskridge Lane’s estate, of which Mrs. Johnston is administratrix; requests a copy of all the proceedings of James Buchanan’s estate; comments on U. S. Grant’s visit to Baltimore and its contrast with that of Andrew Johnson to Philadelphia, and the entertainment of Grant by neighbors, regretting that they could not attend because of Mrs. Johnston’s bereavement.
