Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane agreeable to her spending more time in New York; objecting to her seeing Mrs. Brown on her return because she would be “exposed to the company of a person” whose name he cannot mention “with Christian temper”; saying he will not go to Havana or Nassau; feeling sorry that he cannot tell what Harry Magraw proposes; commenting on newspaper accounts of the history of his administration; expressing happiness over hearing from Dr. Gwen, who is in prison; admonishing her not to address her letters to “Ex-President”; and enclosing two letters “from a crazy lover of yours,” which he had opened.
