Title: Lizzie Lauber Scherenschnitte

Description: Papercut or Scherenschnitte wrought by a student at Linden Hall Seminary, Lititz. Mounted on dark red balanced weave fabric on board. Design has a flowerpot base; tree with leaves, birds (including a peacock), tulips, and girl with watering can held over a plant/flower. The girl is wearing pantaloons under a full skirt.; Inscribed on reverse: "Lizzie Lauber cut this for me when (at) Lititz school I was 15 years old then we were chums" and "Cut out be (by?) a school friend of G-Mother's. Done when they were at Linden Hall- Lititz about 1818. Mother was born 1836 went Linden Hall when about 12 years."

Provenance: Typewritten inscription on reverse side of back board states: "From the sale of Anna Elizabeth Martin, 242 N. Charlotte St., Lancaster. 94 years old, 6-21-58" Perhaps written by auctioneer?

Condition: Fair

Condition Notes: Crease down center of papercut, slight discoloration here. Two pinholes in center, near crease. 2 distinct dark stains, and a few other lesser stains. Several outer portions have folds or creases, and there are many places where the piece has torn, but the pieces are still present. One bird at the top right of the tree is in very bad shape, with missing pieces. One 'leaf' missing on the lift side of the tree. Remounted by conservator Brian Howard with a new window mat & Plexi glazing. Repairs done.

Description: Note: This group of six photocopied letters to Rev. Eugene A. Freauf were generously provided by Linden Hall School, which retains the originals.; Letter 1 Letter concerns the bill of Miss Yates in the amount of 8½ cents. No date.; Letter 2 Letter making arrangements to send Miss Hobbs, Miss Dow, and the Misses Laumans for a Saturday appointment. Miss Lane will not be going, but Mr. John Ford, the driver of the carriage, is a careful driver. Wheatland, 26 September 1849.; Letter 3 Letter regretting not attending a musical presentation because of bad weather. Wheatland, 6 March 1850. Letter 4 Letter offering to send a carriage for Miss Theodora, the Misses Laumans, and his niece if they have permission to visit him. Wheatland, 13 August 1850. Letter 5 Letter announcing that Harriet Parker, sister of Miss Hetty, will accompany a pupil for the school. Wheatland, 18 November 1851.; Letter 6 Letter regretting that he cannot attend a function at the school tomorrow because of bad weather and because he has already accepted an invitation to attend the opening of the plank road between Lancaster and Petersburg. Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.; The George Steinman Papers, Series 2 is a collection of original correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera primarily compiled by George Steinman. The contents of Series 2 represent Lancaster city and county events, prominent citizens, buildings, monuments, churches, cemeteries, schools, and businesses. Most of what Steinman collected relates to 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania, highlighting Lancaster and Philadelphia. One of the key events highlighted is the Revolutionary war; with documents and images related to Philadelphia, George Washington, the Atlee family, and General Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Riot and to various buildings in early Lancaster; including but not limited to the Old Jail, the British Prison, and Postlethwaite's Tavern. Also included in the collection is currency printed by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1764, and Confederate States currency and bonds.
