Description
Letter from Col. James Wood in Lancaster to Joseph Reed, President of Pennsylvania's Supreme Executive Council, regarding British prisoners of war and the overcrowded conditions of the barracks at Lancaster. Col. Wood provides an estimate of the number of soldiers with the British Army, as well as women and children traveling with them that must be accommodated; expresses the need for lumber for temporary shelters and a hospital; detail regarding the Continental and militia troops onsite as guards and who will be moving seamen to a barracks in Philadelphia; and requests instructions from Read on how to proceed.

Description
A poem written by a prisoner in the state prison of New Jersey about dealing with the pain and distress of incarceration, transcribed by Thomas Welsh.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Newspaper clippings describe Swarthmore College events, the Clement M. Biddle Historical Library, Boys Club Federation, Rotary Club, Community Chest campaign, Red Cross campaigns, Daylight Savings Bill, and an article from a Warsaw newspaper. The volume also contains ephemera, correspondence, telegrams, invitations, programs, and announcements regarding births, marriages, and deaths in the Biddle family.

Grace Anna Brosius was the daughter of Hon. Marriott Henry Brosius and Elizabeth Jackson Coates Brosius of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She attended Swarthmore College from 1895-1897. She married Clement Miller Biddle (1876-1959) on 28 November 1900 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The James Buchanan Family Papers were collected by the James Buchanan Foundation for the Preservation of Wheatland. This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Digitization of the James Buchanan Family Papers was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.

This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay. Orders include: Poor Children, Almshouse, Bridges, Coroners' Inquests, Prisons, Roads, Court House, and Tax Exonerations.
