Description: Transcription of a letter from William McCaskey to John Piersol "Jack" McCaskey, dated June 14,1865. Original located in Folder 2, Insert 11.; In the original letter to Jack, William laments that there was nothing to do but the occasional drill and the resulting complaints about their treatment by the government; discusses pros and cons of the regular army and a furlough for Cye. With a torn envelope. From Camp of the 79th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

Admin/Biographical History: William Spencer McCaskey was born near Paradise, Lancaster County, in 1843. The family moved to Lancaster in 1855, where William received his education in public schools. And in 1859, he began an apprenticeship at the printing office of the Examiner, where he worked until the outbreak of the Civil War.; Just days after Fort Sumter was fired upon in April 1861, William joined the army and served with Company F of the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry until he mustered out in July. He joined Company B of the 79th Pennsylvania Regiment as 1st Sergeant in September of that year; this company of Lancastrians served under Col. Henry A. Hambright and Lt. Col. David Miles. They engaged in battles in Kentucky and Tennessee before they returned to Lancaster in 1864 and re-enlisted. Company B joined Gen. Sherman's army in May 1864. As they moved through Georgia and South Carolina in Sherman's March to the Sea, William wrote about the campaign, the residents, and affects that the Union Army's actions had on the South.; Capt. McCaskey mustered out in July 1865, and in spite of the many objections he had voiced about army life, he re-enlisted in 1866 after receiving a recommendation of the commission of second lieutenant from Thaddeus Stevens. William commanded troops throughout his career on the frontiers of Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, Texas, and Missouri and also during the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippines. He retired at the rank of Major General in October 1907.

Description: Photostatic copy of letter from Thaddeus Stevens to Col. S. Stevens regarding [Caledonia]. Thaddeus received the first communication from his manager that [the Confederates] were led on Tuesday to where the teams were and took all of the horses and mules and even crippled some horses. They took 4,000 pounds of bacon, molasses, contents of the store, $1,000 worth of corn from the mills and other grain, and $4,000 worth of bar iron. On Friday, they burned the furnace, sawmill, two forges and another mill. They kept the office and store room that night and burned them on Saturday. Damage was worse than Thaddeus expected and he doesn't know what the poor families will do; he must provide for their relief. Lancaster.

Title: Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox

Description: Draft of a letter from Thomas Welsh to General Orlando B. Willcox. From Hustonville, Kentucky. Deals with disciplinary matters in the 27th Michigan Regiment, including the Chaplain who wrote a plaintive letter to the Detroit Advertiser & Tribune that was also evidently disrespectful to his superior officers. Welsh arrested the Chaplain, but recommends against dismissing him from service. In another matter involving charges brought by the late Lt. Col. Sprague of the 27th against Col. Fox of the 27th, Welsh declines to convene a Court Martial, recommending that for procedural reasons it be handled at the Department or Division level instead.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Title: Letter from William Augustus Atlee to Gen. Joseph Reed

Description: Letter from William Augustus Atlee to Gen. Joseph Reed regarding the condition of nearly 2,000 British prisoners-of-war (POWs) confined in barracks in Lancaster. There were about 800 prisoners of war stationed at the Lancaster Barracks, many sick with a "putrid fever," when more arrived from Virginia without knowledge of the conditions at Lancaster. Nearly 500 of the newly arrived prisoners-of-war were women and children. Married couples were encamped on the common outside the stockade and some in the old stables. Curbing the illness that was quickly spreading through the barracks and preventing it from spreading throughout Lancaster was the primary concern.

Description: Letter from R. C. Long in Murfreesboro, Tennessee to his father, Moses Clark, regarding news of the Confederate Army in Harrisburg. He has heard that Abe Long wishes to be exempt from the draft and gives his opinion of Copperheads, support for the Union, and friends and cousins who are not serving. "It makes me feel bad to think that I am the only one of our kind that is in the service when I have so many Cousins and relatives at home that are just as able to go as I was." With transcription.

Admin/Biographical History: Reuben Clark Long enlisted 30 September 1861 and served as a private with the 79th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers, Company E until his death at Chickamauga, Georgia on 19 September 1863.

Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane stating that he opened her letter from Mrs. Kennedy and read the part dealing with John Lane’s estate; hoping that Mr. Riddle visits Lancaster when she is there; saying that a case has been argued in Harrisburg with no decision yet; expressing sorrow at the illness of James Henry’s wife; reporting that Bob Nevin visited last night and that he had his hand on General Whipple’s shoulder when he was mortally wounded and is taking the body to New Hampshire; expressing disappointment that no welcoming was planned for the 122nd Regiment; hoping the political parties may not “have a collision,” and having no further information about the Lanes except that Dick’s house is not yet finished. With envelope addressed in care of Frederick Brown, Esq., Philadelphia. Wheatland.
