Letter from Thomas Welsh to Alice Welsh (daughter)
Description
Handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. From Newport News, Virginia. Letter details Welsh's frustration over not receiving a letter from home and not being able to secure leave to visit home. Shares news about various soldiers from Columbia under his command and the return of a deserter to his previous command. Inquires about health of the family and to give each child a kiss from him.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Harriet Lane to James Buchanan expressing her displeasure with Rockaway which is just as it was the previous summer. She reminds him of the medals she earned at school and asks him to take her to historic Northern towns when Congress adjourns. She says that Mr. Walker is coming but Eskridge is not, remembers the hospitality of Mrs. Dallas in Philadelphia, and asks of the health of Miss Hetty. Signed Harriette. She praises a concert given by pianist [Maurice] Strakosch and Miss Northall and urges him to purchase a piano like it.
