This collection contains letters written to or received from Gen. William McCaskey and other members of his family, as well as two photographs.
Admin/Biographical History
Gen. William Spencer McCaskey was born near Paradise, Lancaster County, and was the younger brother of noted educator John Piersol McCaskey. At 17 he enlisted in Company F of the 47th Regiment during the Civil War. He reenlisted and saw combat in Kentucky, Tennessee, and participated in Sherman's March to the Sea. He mustered out in 1865 as a Captain. He reenlisted again the following year and served all over the United States before retiring as a Major General in 1907. He died in San Francisco in 1914. He was married to Eleanor Garrison, with whom he had six children: Margaret, Hiram, Garrison, Douglas, Charles, and Eleanor.

Fragment of a handwritten letter from Thomas Welsh most likeley intended for Annie Welsh. The letter fragment contains news from camp; a discussion of the acceptance by his men of discipline, temperance, drilling, etc.; a visit by Govenor Curtin's brother to visit his two sons, and the expectation of his next posting. The letter identifies him as "45" in the letters published in the Columbia Spy. Note: Although the letter fragment is not dated, its content clearly establishes its origin in Camp Hamilton, November 1861. This is a transcription of the original letter.

Letter details Welsh's frustration over not receiving a letter from home and not being able to secure leave to visit home. Letter from Ben McComsey to his mother from Minor Hill, Virginia regarding their last encampment near Georgetown which was a pleasant location and the were able to wash their clothing in the Potomac. He describes their current location at Minor Hill as "not a healthy place and the sooner we are out of it the better for our health." Ben is still feeling well, but William Markley has been taken to the hospital in Washington with Typhoid fever. He answers an apparent question about carrying his belongings and the weight of the items, requests apple butter, and asks for a fine tooth comb since some of the other me have lice.
Stationery has a picture in red and blue of a hand holding two American flags and a banner "God and our native land." Below the picture "For the flag our fathers gave, / O'er our children's head shall wave, / And their children's children's grave. / God for our native land."
Admin/Biographical History
Benjamin was the son of William and Mary Ann (Dorwart) McComsey. In 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Ben's service during the Civil War was brief. He enlisted in Lancaster on 7 August 1862 and was mustered into the U.S. Army on August 11 as a private with Company D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. He died from typhoid fever in a military hospital at Berlin, Worcester County, Maryland on 7 November 1862.

Letter from Capt.George Bush to Gen. Edward Hand regarding the desperation of the situation at Sunbury and requesting instructions and supplies. Capt. Bush is lacking men, ammunition, clothing, and other supplies and at the same time has to provide protection for local inhabitants who are facing attacks from indigenous people on the frontier.

This collection contains letters to and from members of the Slater Brown family. Most are to or from his daughter, Mary H. Brown. Mary and her husband, Edwin Morgan, were merchants in San Francisco from 1853-1855. The subjects of the letters range from Mary's early schooling to their time in California during the gold rush.

Mary H. Brown married Edwin L. Morgan, son
of James and Zillah Morgan. They lived in San Francisco, CA from 1853-1855 and then moved to Philadelphia and purchased a residence at 1608 Wallace Street. Edwin later manufactured steam engines and boilers with Morgan, Orr & Co., Callowhill Street, Philadelphia.
These letters were purchased at auction by the donor.

April 1764 issue of The Gentleman's Magazine includes article on massacre by Benjamin Franklin. 10 January entry in Charles Mason's diary contains discussion of massacre. Manuscript copy of remonstrance, signed by Matthew Smith and James Gibson and sent to Governor John Penn, lays out grievances against provincial government and justifies attacks on Native Americans.
