Lancaster Countians not only have been readers; they have been authors. The first history of the

Lancaster County. Many of these enter- prises are gone now. Flourmilling was the county's major dollar- producer in the mid-nineteenth century. Shoe and boot-making was another large industry that should be covered thoroughly. Political history never seems to seize control; it is content to be an old

Society's first venture in original publications. The 1883 Ellis and Evans History of Lancaster County and the 1875 Everts and Stewart Atlas of Lancaster County have been reprinted by the Society. A. Hunter Rineer's magnum opus, Churches and Cemeteries of Lancaster County, Pa., published posthumously in

Philadelphia and meet at Lancaster, which they did on 27 September 1777. Their paths thither took a northern route, arching through Berks and Northampton counties to avoid any British patrols that might be lurking in central Chester County. Upon reaching Lancaster, members of the Congress discovered the town

shared in the promotion of the Crematorium. Virtually every at- torney in Lancaster held stock in the institution. In the Janaury 1886 issue of The Modern Crematist, the local effort was described in these glowing terms: The cremation interest in Lancaster, Pa., where the first crematorium for general
