Henry to Louisa Anderson saying he enjoyed the ride over the new road; the Cassatts moved to the country, and Cousin Alice was in Oxford; visited an old lady, [Mrs.] Platt, who was changed as much as Miss Hetty; will visit Cousin Alice; is well and misses his family. Envelope with postmark and stamp addressed to Mrs. J. Buchanan Henry, care, Dr. Anderson, Stapleton, Staten Island, New York. Both envelope and letter badly water damaged with bits missing along edge. Philadelphia, [1876].

Swarr reporting that Mr. Cassatt has no clerkships available at present, but would be glad to have a specimen of Charlie’s penmanship, or could place him in the shops at any time, if he wanted to be a mechanical engineer; praising the weather and shops in Altoona, should the Swarrs care to visit; mentioning that Mr. Cassatt will be away for a few dates, but should be back all next week; and noting that Mr. Henry has not sent a receipt for his draft. Letter from E. Y. Buchanan to H. B. Swarr noting that the advertisement of Rev. Buchanan’s farm contains the superfluous word “on” and asking to have Mr. Smith correct it; asking him as a personal favor to contact Mr. Dripps regarding a late mortgage payment; noting that nothing has been received from Mr. Wise yet, except Mr. Monaghan has received $100 from him; worrying that Mr. Hiester may accept delays from Judge Black regarding the lawsuit, and that until the issue is settled they may as well not bother to hire a biographer because they could not furnish him with any papers other than those already in their possession; and noting that he has spoken to Mr. Cassatt again concerning Charles. Description
Transcriptions of several pieces of correspondence to Maria Lois Buchanan Cassatt from a number of individuals, including: A. J. Cassatt; her sisters, Anne Buchanan, Alice Buchanan and Henrietta Buchanan; her mother, Anne Foster Buchanan; her brother, Henry Buchanan; her cousin, Harriet Lane Johnston; and her father, Edward Y. Buchanan. All the correspondence is to Mary while she was visiting her cousin, Harriet Johnston, in Baltimore. Mary's stay was extended when Harriet left to see to James Buchanan at Wheatland in his last days before his death and Mary stayed with Harriet’s son. Some of the originals of Harriet’s letters are in Part 2 of this collection. Lancaster, PA; Altoona, PA; Oxford Parsonage, PA; Philadelphia, PA. 23 March 1868 through June 12, 1868.
