Scrapbook of Grace Anna Brosius Biddle, 1911-1926. This scrapbook chronicles the social life of Grace and the political, service, and religious life of her husband, Clement M. Biddle. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, church bulletins, event programs, photographs, and correspondence. The newspaper clippings, from French and American publications, pertain to YMCA/YWCA campaigns, World War I volunteer and post-war relief efforts, travel overseas, and local and national events. The ephemera includes announcements of Swarthmore College alumni events in Mount Vernon, New York.
Admin/Biographical History
Grace Anna Brosius was the daughter of Hon. Marriott Henry Brosius and Elizabeth Jackson Coates Brosius of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. She attended Swarthmore College from 1895-1897. She married Clement Miller Biddle (1876-1959) on 28 November 1900 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter expresses concern for Lillie's recent illness, how much Welsh misses his family, and his eagerness to receive expected items from home. Inquires about health of the family and to give his wife and each child a kiss from him.

Description
Handwritten fragment of a letter from Thomas Welsh to his daughter, Alice. Marked "Evening" at top, most likely page 2 of a letter. Letter includes thoughts about his family; fear of being forgotten by his kids; story of capturing a Rebel soldier at South Mountain and how he identified with that soldier having a similar family situation.

Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Letter from Thomas Welsh to Annie Welsh (wife)
Description
Transcription of letter from Thomas Welsh to his wife, Annie. Location is "In Camp 8 miles West of Frederick." Letter written in the early morning, the day of the battle of South Mountain. Text details conditions in the chase of the Rebels through Frederick, Maryland and his feeling "that a great Battle will be fought between here and Hagerstown within a few days — perhaps today." Notes General Burnside's compliment of the 45th Regiment and tells Annie to "take the children and go to Lebanon" if Confederate forces should approach Columbia.

Description
Handwritten autobiography of Brigadier General Thomas Welsh. Mentions his birth in May 1824 and his military career beginning with his enlistment during the Mexican War through October 1861. Although undated, this was clearly written after November 29, 1862 when he was brevetted to Brigadier (more likely it was written shortly before or after he was commissioned in March 1863). Written in the third person. One page. Note: This is the third biography included in this collection, see also MG0828_SeriesA_F01 It01 and MG0828_SeriesD-62_F06.
