History of the Lancaster County Historical Society John Ward Willson Loose As the Lancaster County Historical Society begins its second century of service to the community—to the residents, young and old, of Lancaster County—and to the many visitors, scholars, and researchers that come to our

organ of the new group. Its June, 1893, issue in­ formed readers seven brewers and six distillers had been granted licenses in Lancaster County, and suggested this was too much for the preservation of morality amongst the citizenry. Mr. Mast pitched a tent in New Holland in September, 1893, only to have

national pastime—and in Lancaster County the urge found full expression. Whether it was Philip Benedict inventing a new stove—which the Society has in its collection—or Martin Shreiner, the renowned clockmaker, building an elegant new fire engine for the Sun Fire Company, the Red Rose city was not about to

"bursting at the seams," and there would be no lodgings or places to conduct the business of government. The Pennsylvania state government had arrived earlier from Philadelphia, and had established its various offices in Lancaster. The county courthouse had been appropriated for the state legislature, and

The foregoing data, issued by the American Iron & Steel Association in Philadelphia in November, 1885, was compiled as an argument for increased duties. The use of charcoal was not without its

It is not the purpose of this survey, however, to consider the effectiveness of county historical societies in fulfilling their real objectives. Each society knows its reasons for existence
