Description
James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 4 Papers of Edward Young Buchanan, Series 2 contains the financial and legal documents of Edward Young Buchanan. The dates range from 1834 to 1883. This series includes documents and receipts related to James Buchanan's estate, personal account books of Edward Young Buchanan from 1832 to 1844, and a document appointing Edward Young Buchanan as guardian of Harriet R. Lane.
Admin/Biographical History
Reverend Edward Young Buchanan (1811-1895) was born on May 30, 1811 in Mercersburg in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He was the child of James Buchanan (1761-1821) and Elizabeth Speer Buchanan (1767-1833). He was the younger brother of President James Buchanan (1791-1868). He went to college at Dickinson College. He later became a reverend.
In 1833, he married Anne Eliza Foster Buchanan (1812-1891), and together they had six children: Ann Elizabeth (1838-1927), Harriet (1841-1912), Henrietta Jane (1844-1906), Marie Lois (1847-1920), William Foster (1849-1875), and Alice Conyngham (1852-1931).
Rev. Edward Young Buchanan died on January 25, 1895.

Description
The Andrew B. Rote Collection contains the business records of C. V. Rote & Co., which later became A. B. Rote & Co., and some family records. The Lancaster company specialized in awnings and ironwork. Deeds, mortgages, and other property records are for property owned by the Rotes and used for their business. The record books of the company, 1881-1942, show accounting, clients, cash flow, bids, and inventory. A catalog of architectural bronze and iron works illustrates their products. There are also stock certificates for a number of local and regional businesses such as Farmers Trust Company, Union Trust Company, and Meadia Heights Golf Club.
Admin/Biographical History
C. V. Rote & Company was founded by Charles V. Rote, Jacob F. Bender, and John W. Holman on 3 March 1881, specifically for the manufacture of awnings. Bender and Holman provided the financing, space for the shop, the time they could commit, and the use of their horse and buggy. Rote committed his labor and time in manufacturing the awnings. Their initial success continued when they added architectural bronze and iron work. Andrew B. Rote took over the business in 1894, which was then located at 111-117 E. Chestnut Street, Lancaster.

Description
The Friendship Fire Company Records contain the constitution and by-laws, minutes, partial transcription of the minutes, and an account book for the Friendship Fire Company of Lancaster.
Admin/Biographical History
The Friendship Fire Company began in 1763. It was out of existence from 1768 until 1791 and then reorganized. The company ended its active service in 1882 when the paid City Fire Department came into existence. (Ellis & Evans, page 384)

Description
This book records the financial business of Daniel Lefever of Drumore Township from 1844 to 1845. The book is 558 pages and includes a partial index at front, names of customers and records of sales of produce, lime, wood and other goods. Ephemera found in the account book includes a small amount of genealogical notes about Daniel Lefever, a note to Daniel Lefever from A. S. Irving regarding the purchase of lime in 1845, and the administrators' account of Robert M. Dunn of Drumore Township in 1858.
Admin/Biographical History
Daniel Lefever was born near Lampeter Square in 1805, the son of John Lefever and Elizabeth Keeports. The family moved to Drumore Township when Daniel was a boy and he later purchased a portion of his father's farm and became one of the most successful farmers in the southern part of the county. Lefever began to engage in the lime burning business in the 1830s in addition to farming. He married twice - first to Elizabeth Lefever and then to Susan Swinehart. His son Galen I. Lefever would later take over his father's business.
