Handwritten autobiography of Thomas Welsh, written in third person. Text sketches his military career through the Battle of South Mountain. This is an unfinished draft, with portions crossed out. Initially written in July 1862 while he was at Hilton Head, South Carolina then the section about Acquia Creek, Virginia and South Mountain, Maryland were added in pencil after the Battle of South Mountain, September 14, 1862.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. See MG0828 for more biographical information.

This collection was relocated from the Wheatland mansion to the LancasterHistory archives in the Spring of 2009. Discharge certificate. Private William Henry Lebkicher of Lancaster City, Pennsylvania, eighteen years old, enrolled on the second of August 1862 under Captain J. Miller Raub’s Company D 122nd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to serve nine months, was discharge from the service of the United States on the fifteenth of May 1863 at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Letter from John Fass to friend. Fass reported for duty in Lancaster in March 1865 and his unit moved to Philadelphia, Harper's Ferry, Martinsburg, Charlestown, Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Stevenson Station, and Summit Point. He mentions that Richmond was taken. He describes the natural resources so prevalent in Virginia, which is not as developed as Lancaster County. Compares the slave quarters he has seen in Virginia to hog pens in Pennsylvania.
