Title: Archive of Alice P. Fordney

Description: This collection contains ephemera related to Alice Potter Fordney, antiques dealer and rugmaker. Items in the collection include business correspondence with Armstrong, F. Schumacher & Co., and the Montclair art museum; personal correspondence with friends and family; hooked rug patterns; and antiques sale flyers from the early 20th century. Also included in the collection are newspaper clippings, including the obituary of Fordney's sister Ellen Franklin; reference material for rug making and interior design (informational sheets, books and patterns); several items related to the Yeates School, which Fordney's brother William Bush Fordney attended; several photographs of unidentified persons; and a statement related to the will of William J. Fordney, her uncle.

Admin/Biographical History: Alice Potter Fordney was born June 21, 1887 in Lancaster, the daughter of Ida Cox and Thomas Potter Fordney. A prominent antique dealer from the late 1920s to her retirement in 1965, Fordney also made and sold hooked rugs.; Fordney's family features prominently in Lancaster County history. Her maternal great-grandfather was John Michael, who owned the historic Grape Hotel from 1805-1839. Fordney's paternal great-grandfather William Jenkins built Wheatland in 1828 and later sold the property to President James Buchanan. Colonel William Bush Fordney, her paternal grandfather, was a prominent lawyer in Lancaster. He served as district attorney from 1839-1845 and negotiated for the loan that enabled Lancaster city to build the "water works" in the 1830s. Sarah Cox, her maternal grandmother, was a known philanthropist and for years helped to manage the Home for Friendless Children in Lancaster. Her sister, Ellen Fordney Franklin, was a "pioneer" in the industry of women's knit suits, opening her first shop in 1929 in Philadelphia.; Fordney never married. She kept in contact with her nieces and nephews, as evidenced by letters in the collection. According to notes provided by Wendell Zercher, Sarah Ellmaker McIlvaine Muench, her niece and the donor of the collection, recalled her as "warm and artistic," and "a character." Description: The Diffenderffer Family Papers collection contains items that have been passed down through generations of the Diffenderffer family. Deeds for tracts of land in New Holland date back to the creation of New Design, the village that preceded New Holland. Correspondence and some manuscripts pertain to J. P. McCaskey's life and accomplishments. F. R. Diffenderffer's manuscripts on Easter Day and Conrad Weiser are preserved with this collection, as well as poems, a program for the C. There is also a photograph of Private Charles E. Schuler in uniform.

Admin/Biographical History: Charles E. Schuler was born on November 16, 1896 to parents Charles Schuler and Elizabeth "Lizzie" May Tillbeck Schuler. He fought in WWI as a Private in the U.S. Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged after the end of the war in 1919. He was later married to Reba C. Schuler (1899-1964). Together they had two children, Charles and Jere. Charles passed away in 1962.

Description: The William Barlow Papers contains the military artifacts and materials collected by and associated with William Barlow, who was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Antiaircraft M.G. Bn. Coc. during World War I. The materials include AEF documentation and identification for Barlow's use while in the field, field materials and literature, letters, maps, writings and newspaper articles written by Barlow, photographs, and certificates for his honorable discharge from the army.

Admin/Biographical History: William Barlow was born in Dundee, Scotland on June 29, 1896 to Arthur Barlow, and Faith Taylor Barlow. He was one of six children. His family immigrated to America when he was young, and eventually moved to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. In 1917, Barlow enlisted in the war effort for WWI, and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Antiaircraft Machine Gun Battalion. After the war, Barlow married Esther Barlow. Barlow worked for Armstrong Cork Company as an engineer. On June 27, 1954, Barlow passed away.

Description: The Military Records for Charles A. Meisenberger contain the military materials and paperwork, documenting the career Charles A. Meisenberger had in the Army, from 1898 to 1938, when he was last discharged. Meisenberger served in the Spanish American War, the China Insurrection, the Mexican War, and World War I. Admin/Biographical History: Charles A. Meisenberger was born on December 18, 1874. He served in the military for 40 years, and served during the Spanish American War, the China Insurrection, the Mexican War, and World War I. Meisenberger was married to Mary E. Buch before they eventually divorced. Together they had three children: Charles A. Jr., Vintage, Paul A. and Catherine Mary. He passed away on October 5, 1941 at the age of 66.

Admin/Biographical History: William Raymond Elbert was born around 1896 to Leopold Elbert and Annie M. Seifert Elbert. He had three siblings, Leopold, John, and Clara. William R. Elbert fought in World War I and survived the war, before coming home in 1919. When he returned, he married Mary Driendl Elbert (1900-1974). Together they had two children, William and Rose. William R. Elbert passed away at the age of 78 years in 1974.
