Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane agreeable to her spending more time in New York; objecting to her seeing Mrs. Brown on her return because she would be “exposed to the company of a person” whose name he cannot mention “with Christian temper”; saying he will not go to Havana or Nassau; feeling sorry that he cannot tell what Harry Magraw proposes; commenting on newspaper accounts of the history of his administration; expressing happiness over hearing from Dr. Gwen, who is in prison; admonishing her not to address her letters to “Ex-President”; and enclosing two letters “from a crazy lover of yours,” which he had opened. This record group contains canceled orders that were issued by the county commissioners for payment to be made by the county treasurer. The orders show date, order number, amount, name of payee, purpose, and signatures of the county commissioners. In the case of "poor children," teachers were reimbursed by the county for tuition and/or the supplies purchased for students whose parents were unable to pay.
