Title: George Steinman Papers, Series 1 and 2

Description: The George Steinman Papers, Series 1 contains an album, compiled by George Steinman, with many photographs of buildings, tombstones, monuments and scenes of Lancaster city and county. Ephemera and newspaper articles are among the photographs. Represented in the album are Postlethwaite's Tavern, hotels and taverns, fire houses, the Conestoga massacre, churches, cemeteries, Ephrata Cloister, prominent citizens and their homes, Stehli Silk Mill, and schools. The four boxes contain orginal correspondence, documents, photographs and ephemera or and pertaining to the same subject matter as the album.; The George Steinman Papers, Series 2 is a collection of original correspondence, documents, photographs, and ephemera primarily compiled by George Steinman. The contents of Series 2 represent Lancaster city and county events, prominent citizens, buildings, monuments, churches, cemeteries, schools, and businesses. Most of what Steinman collected relates to 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania, highlighting Lancaster and Philadelphia. One of the key events highlighted is the Revolutionary war; with documents and images related to Philadelphia, George Washington, the Atlee family, and General Edward Hand. There are images relating to the Christiana Riot and to various buildings in early Lancaster; including but not limited to the Old Jail, the British Prison, and Postlethwaite's Tavern. Also included in the collection is currency printed by Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia in 1764, and Confederate States currency and bonds.

Title: Remarks opposing Zachary Taylor's presidential candidacy

Description: Handwritten draft of remarks evidently written by Thomas Welsh in opposition to Zachary Taylor’s 1848 presidential Campaign (Whig Party) and in favor of Senator Lewis Cass (Democratic Party). Remarks addressed to Mr. President and possibly delivered at a large Democratic Party meeting in Columbia on September 30, 1848 of which Welsh was reported to be secretary by the Columbia Spy, 7 October 1848. Watermark "Owen & Hurlbut, So Lee, Mass." South Lee, Massachusetts.

Admin/Biographical History: Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Thomas Kittera, Esq., saying that he is recommending to the Secretary of War to extend the furlough of Kittera’s nephew based on the certificate of Dr. McClellan; lamenting that he could not find Mr. Poinsett in his office, that Mr. C. will probably require a certificate of an army surgeon, and that the affair is “about up to Gen. Macomb’s standard of intellect,” Lt. Conrad will know himself; commenting of a less than stellar performance of Mr. Clay advocating the chartering of Bank of the United States as a sovereign entity as a “panacea for all our existing evils”; and finally wishing to be remembered to his family “not forgetting that portion of it in which I feel a particular interest.” Lancaster.

Description: James Buchanan Family Papers, Part 1, Papers of James Buchanan, Series 6 is arranged into three subseries of miscellaneous materials.; Subseries 1 is sheet music dedicated to James Buchanan, including the Wheatland Polka, The Schottisch, and Buchanan's Union Grand March.; Subseries 2 is published and print materials, including newspaper cartoons and illustrations, pamphlets for the 1824 election of John Quincy Adams, a tourist card, and meeting minutes.; Subseries 3 includes government documents, an act to alter and amend the several acts imposing tariffs, commercial treaties, supplementary acts, a document signed by Secretary of State William L. Marcy, a passport signed by James Buchanan, land grants, and other government documents, including some in French, Spanish, English, and German.

Admin/Biographical History: James Buchanan was born on April 23, 1791 to James Buchanan and Elizabeth Speer. He was the second child born out of ten children, and he would go on to outlive all but one of his siblings. Most popularly remembered as Pennsylvania's only President and as a lifelong bachelor, Buchanan committed a lifetime to politics. In 1821, he left his law practice and embarked on his political career after having been voted into the U.S. House of Representatives. He would remain in the House for five consecutive terms before serving as the U.S. Minister to Russia, a Senator in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. Secretary of State, the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, and finally, the 15th President of the United States.
