Description: Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing gratitude for a five-day interlude in his less than happy position as personal secretary to the President and is “disconsolate” after Mr. Scharff’s leaving on the Harriet Lane; provides intimate details of a conversations with Mr. Scharff about their opening a law office together in New York after his upcoming marriage and that all four will be happy together living in adjoining houses in a pleasant little town near Manhattan; renders an account of his entire life including the death of his parents, his college experiences, his passing the bar in Philadelphia and setting up a thriving office there before being called by the President to be his personal secretary, a post he hopes to vacate as soon as possible to return to law practice; and his relative freedom while James Buchanan and Harriet Lane go to Bedford for a retreat, leaving him free to visit Mary on the weekends. Envelope with most of the postmark removed with the stamps and addressed to Miss Mary H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland; also a blank invitation card of the President’s. Washington, D.C.

Description: Letter from J. B. Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson expressing surprise and delight at receiving her “extra” letter which he received a day late because the President and his party were still in the country and he is happy that her mother guards her well; reports that talking to her mother was gratifying especially since Mary’s grandmother was feeling better; the president of the Austrian ministry would like to present an autographed letter to the President in person; met her Uncle Peter and his wife this morning; has not seen Dan or the girls but will soon; will move back to the city very soon; his friend Schraff appears to have shaken the blues over a love affair; hopes she will be well enough to visit him soon. Envelope with stamp and postmark addressed to Miss M. H. Nicholson, Care Col. Nicholson, Annapolis, Maryland. Washington, D.C.

Henry to Mary Hagner Nicholson trying to get over a “large dinner”; looking forward to next week when he hopes to bring his yacht to Annapolis for a sail to Baltimore and back if he gets the weekend off and the weather is fine; the President granted a short reprieve to Barret, who should have been hanged today; wonders of Miss Emily’s sore throat is better; hopes she will be able to accompany Miss Ella to Washington so that he and she can see each other every night and would be her first visit to the capital since their engagement; Mr. Magraw came from Baltimore to have dinner with him and hopes Magraw and a ”sparkling young widow” will soon make a match; has received an invitation to General Henderson’s daughter’s wedding, the groom, Mr. du Pont, is a good friend of his.
