Servants bell used by Thaddeus Stevens. Has thin, disk-shaped stone base with bell mounted above, encircled by a decorative housing comprised of three Mother of Pear shells, floral and vining grapes of copper, and external copper clapper suspended from an arching copper wire. Stone base supports a brass pierced gallery encircling the bell.
Handwritten account of the life and military career of Thomas Welsh by Blanton Welsh. Discusses the role of his mother Annie in keeping the family together and the careers of himself and three of his siblings: Mary, Lilian, and Thomas Anna.
Admin/Biographical History
Thomas Welsh (1824-1863) was a Lancaster County native (born and raised in Columbia), who rose from hardscrabble origins to local fame, first as a Mexican War hero, and then as a brigadier general during the Civil War. He was well known and well respected as a no nonsense officer, for his leadership and gallantry in battle, for his dedication to the service of his country, and for his concern for the welfare of his men. Walking cane used by Congressman Thaddeus Stevens late in life. Made of a tree branch with irregularities and smoothed knots; unusual wood with pronounced grain. Grip end curves into a burled knob. Glossy finish.
Silver cap on tip of grip is engraved: "This cane / was the property / of Hon. Thaddeus Stevens / during his latter days. / Presented to H.A. Zug, 1868." Bottom end wrapped with a 1.25" wide brass collar and an iron tip.
Provenance
Zug's relationship to Stevens is unknown. Henry A. Zug (22 Aug 1825 - 22 Apr 1890) married Fannie Hershey (5 Jul 1819 - ??) on 19 Nov 1844. Resided in Lancaster City.
In 1871 Henry Zug was a pharmaceutist at 44 E. Chestnut.
In 1873-74 Zug was a custom house inspector at 41 W. Orange St.
1880 Census says Zug was a "dealer in produce".
Death ceritificate of 1890 notes occupation as "druggist supplies".
His daughter, donor Lola Zug (9 Dec 1861 - 28 Jul 1952), was unmarried and a teacher in city.
Memorial card for Susie M. Heise, wife of H. H. Heise, born 18 April 1849, died 11 January 1877, aged 27 years, 8 months, and 23 days. Poem on card. Pasted on lower right-hand corner is a description of the background. In center at top is an image of Mrs. Heise.

Digitization of the James Buchanan Collection was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, PHMC Appl ID # 201808013051, 2019-2020.
Pencil sketch on paper, showing Rock Ford and some out-buildings. The house is two stories, frame construction on a stone foundation, with a peaked roof and two chimneys. It has a pedimented front door and a large side porch (apparently the porch extended to three sides of the house, although this is not visible in the drawing). A fence is running across the lower right section of the drawing.
The following information is written in the upper right corner: '"Rockford"/on Conestoga--/Lanc. Co. Pa--/Residence of/Gen' Ed Hand/he died here/Oct. 21. 1882.'
Rockford was the country seat of General Edward Hand. It overlooks the Conestoga River slightly south of Lancaster. It was most likely completed in the early 1790s.

The edges of the paper are slightly browned, and the entire paper shows vertical buckling. There is a stain on the upper edge near the right corner, and a 1/4" tear about one inch from the upper right corner. The remains of a previous backing are still attached to the corners on the reverse.
The piece is currently float-mounted in hinged window matting.

Event to be held on the steamship City of Hudson, Newport News, Virginia. Machine printed invitation on embossed paper with scalloped edge.
