Description: Letter from James Buchanan to Harriet Lane expressing disappointment that she “was not pleased with the people or with the prospect of living among them”; explaining the enclosed letters, especially one from D. E. Shannon recounting “slovenly & unlawyer like” handling of the coal lands matter, advising her to consult Mr. Jenkins on the matter, a letter from Mrs. Hunter about Virginia heirs, a letter from Mr. Capens relating that James Lane will sell out for $10,000, and his arranging to pay her note at the Farmers Bank; and finally Eliza left, leaving only Mary on the domestic staff. Wheatland.
